Type 2 Master Cylinder

Brake Booster Pushrod-To-Primary Piston Clearance

• With master cylinder removed from vehicle, as described under "Component Replacement," proceed as follows:
• Measure distance between master cylinder end face and the piston, Fig. . Position a square (straight scale) against edge of master cylinder, then measure and subtract thickness of the square to determine dimension B.
• Find dimension C by measuring distance between brake booster mounting surface and the end face, Fig. .

• Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
• Disconnect brake hydraulic line from caliper, then cap brake line.
• Remove caliper assembly from steering knuckle, then the brake pads from the caliper assembly as described in "Brake Pad Service."

In order to properly service and repair available brake systems, a thorough understanding of the power assist systems is necessary. The vacuum assist diaphragm assembly multiplies the force exerted on the master cylinder piston in order to increase the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders or calipers while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.

When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust, as many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations, the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level due to a chemical breakdown during use. A few precautions will minimize exposure.

Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.
