When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust, as many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level, due to a chemical breakdown during use and a few precautions will minimize exposure. Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.

- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Using chisel, unstake and remove halfshaft nut and washer. Discard nut and washer.
- Remove brake pads and caliper from steering knuckle as described under "Brake Pad Service."
- Support caliper with wire strung from coil spring. Do not disconnect brake line from caliper.
- Using tie rod end separator tool No. T85M-3395-A, or equivalent, disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.
- Remove ball joint pinch bolt, then separate control arm from steering knuckle.
- Remove steering knuckle to strut assembly bolts.

Pump brake pedal several times to exhaust any vacuum in the booster.
- Remove master cylinder as described in "Hydraulic Brake Systems."
- Disconnect vacuum hose from power brake unit.
- From under instrument panel, remove brake pedal clevis pin, then detach pushrod from brake pedal.
- Remove power brake unit attaching nuts, then remove power brake unit.
- Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
- Ensure proper clearance between pushrod and master cylinder exists as described under "Adjustments."
- Bleed brakes as described in "Hydraulic Brake Systems."

The caliper assembly consists of a pin sliding caliper housing, inner and outer shoe and lining assemblies and a single piston, Figs. through .
