Parking Brake

- Raise and support vehicle rear.
- On SL320, SL500, and SL600 models, loosen adjusting bolt.
- On all models, remove one wheel bolt on both rear wheels. Light alloy wheels must be removed.
- Turn adjuster until brake shoes contact and it is no longer possible to turn rear wheel, noting the following:
- Use suitable .1772 inch screw driver.
- Turn righthand side adjuster from bottom up.
- Turn lefthand side adjuster from top down.

Master Cylinder
Brake master cylinder must not be repair on C36, C220, C230, C280, E300, E320, E420, E430, S420, S500, S600 & SL600. Replace only.
Disassemble
- Position cylinder in suitable soft jawed vise, Fig. .
- Slightly press piston using suitable alignment tool and remove cylindrical pin using suitable pliers.
- Remove locking ring and piston with secondary seal package from housing using suitable pliers.
- Remove complete piston for floating circuit using light blows to housing on suitable wood support.

- On S320, S350, S420, S500, S600, SL320, SL500 and SL600 models, remove exhaust system heat shield.
- On C36, C220, C230, C280, E300, E320, E420 and E430 models, remove cover panel under rear squab.
- On S320, S350, S420, S500 and S600 models, proceed as follows:
- Disconnect exhaust system as required.
- Turn preloading automatic slack adjuster eccentric pin counterclockwise approximately 1/2 turn using suitable Allen wrench.
- At same time, push pin back longitudinal slot until spring-loaded locking eccentric locks into spring clip position with elevation.

Less ESP
- Connect suitable brake fluid changing tool following tool manufacturer's instructions. Bleed pressure is 29 psi.
- Open righthand rear brake caliper bleed screw and allow approximately 2.7 ounces of brake fluid to flow out without any bubbles.
- Tighten bleed screw to specifications.
- Repeat bleeding procedure at lefthand rear, righthand front and lefthand front calipers.
- On S320, S350, S420, S500 and S600 models, open master cylinder bleed screw and allow brake fluid to flow without any bubbles. Tighten bleed screw to specifications.
