- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
- Remove drum screws.
- Release parking brake lever.
- Remove parking brake lever cover, then loosen parking brake cable locking nut.
- To increase clearance between shoe and drum, proceed as follows:
- Remove backing plate plug.
- Insert screwdriver into plug hole till its tip contacts shoe hold-down spring, then push hold-down spring as shown, Fig. .
- Remove brake drum by fitting two 8 mm bolts into holes on drum and extracting drum off wheel hub.

Brake System Bleed
Brake fluid is extremely damaging to paint. If fluid should accidentally touch painted surface, immediately wipe fluid from paint and clean painted surface.
The hydraulic lines of the brake system are based on a diagonal split system. When a brake line or hose is disconnected, bleeding operation must be performed at both ends of the line disconnected.

- Remove master cylinder from booster as outlined under " Master Cylinder, Replace," in "Hydraulic Brakes."
- Disconnect pushrod clevis from brake pedal arm.
- Disconnect vacuum hose from booster.
- Remove booster attaching nuts, then the booster assembly.
- Reverse procedure to install, then ensure brake pedal height and pedal travel is correct as outlined under "Brake Pedal Height, Adjust," and "Brake Pedal Travel Check" in "Hydraulic Brakes."
