Disc Brakes -> PBR Single Piston Rear Disc Brake -> Brake Pad Service -> Installation -> Removal

Removal
  • Remove 2/3 of total brake fluid capacity from master cylinder reservoir.
  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  • Install two wheel retaining nuts to retain rotor in position.
  • Position one end of a suitable C-clamp against inlet fitting bolt and other end against outboard shoe and lining.
  • Tighten clamp, Fig. , until piston fully bottoms in caliper bore.
  • Remove upper guide pin bolt and discard.
  • Loosen lower guide pin bolt, then pivot caliper downward on lower guide pin bolt to expose shoe and lining assemblies.

Parking Brake
  • Release parking brake lever, then raise and support vehicle.
  • Remove rear wheels, then install lug nuts on two opposite wheel studs to hold brake rotor in position.
  • Back caliper pistons into bores.
  • Loosen parking brake cable adjusting nut until there is no tension on parking brake shoes.
  • Turn each brake rotor until parking brake shoe star adjuster is visible through hole in rotor.

Refer to Figs. and when performing the following procedures.

  • Remove master cylinder from vehicle as follows:
    • Disconnect and plug hydraulic lines.
    • Remove two master cylinder attaching nuts, then the master cylinder.
  • Remove reservoir cover and diaphragm. Discard old brake fluid in reservoir.
  • Inspect cover and diaphragm.
  • Remove fluid level switch, if equipped.

  • Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect park brake cable at equalizer.
  • Remove tire and wheel assemblies, then install two wheel nuts to retain rotor.
  • If caliper is to be overhauled, remove brake hose fitting bolt/screw, brake hose and brake hose gasket.
