During routine service operations the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level due to a chemical breakdown during use, and a few precautions will minimize exposure.

Before performing any repairs on the ABS system, note the following precautions:
- Before using electric welding equipment, disconnect EBCM.
- Carefully note routing, position and mounting ABS and TCS wiring, connectors, clips and brackets. ABS and TCS are extremely sensitive to electromagnetic interference.
- Do not use a fast charger when battery is connected. Never disconnect battery from system with engine running.
- Ignition switch must be in Off position when disconnecting EBCM.

When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective systems.
If the rear (secondary) brake system fails, initial brake pedal movement will cause the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary piston movement will displace hydraulic fluid in the primary section of the master cylinder to actuate the front brake system.

- If any components are of doubtful strength or quality due to heat discoloration, or are worn, replace them.
- Inspect wheel cylinder dust boots for signs of excessive wear or damage. If any leakage is apparent replace wheel cylinder.
- Clean dirt and/or rust from brake drum, backing plate and all other components. Do not use compressed air or dry brush to clean brake components. Many brake components contain asbestos fibers which, if inhaled, can cause serious injury. Clean brake components with a water soaked rag or a suitable vacuum cleaner to minimize airborne dust.
