With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage.
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove righthand inner splash shield.
- Remove accessory drive belts.
- Remove crankshaft damper retaining bolts.
- Remove crankshaft damper using DaimlerChrysler puller tool No. 1026 and insert tool No. 6827-A, or equivalents.

- Insert a suitable trim stick between access cover and instrument panel center bezel, then gently pry access cover away from trim bezel.
- Remove center bezel to instrument panel attaching screws, then gently pry bezel from away from instrument panel.

Never use cans to charge into high pressure side of system (compressor discharge port) or into system at high temperature, as high system pressure transferred into charging may cause it to explode.
- Attach center hose from manifold gauge set to refrigerant dispensing manifold. Turn refrigerant manifold valves completely counterclockwise to open fully, remove protective caps from refrigerant manifold.

- Remove silencer trim panel from under lefthand side of instrument panel.
- Remove heater core shield to HVAC distribution housing attaching screws, Fig. .
- Pull heater core shield away from HVAC housing and disengage two location tabs.
- Remove heater core shield from distribution housing.
- Disconnect HVAC wire harness connector from mode door actuator connector, Fig. .
