Removal
- Remove 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder reservoir.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Mark wheel to axle flange relationship for installation alignment, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove bolt and washer attaching cable support bracket to caliper, Fig. .
- Remove sleeve bolt and pivot caliper, Fig. . Do not completely remove caliper.
- Remove outboard and inboard shoe and linings, then two pad clips from caliper support.
Installation
- Turn piston and thread it into caliper assembly using suitable spanner-type tool in piston slots...

Brake fluid is corrosive to painted surfaces. Care must be taken not to allow brake fluid to come in contact with painted surfaces on vehicle.
When bleeding the brake system, always bleed righthand rear wheel circuit first, followed by the lefthand front, lefthand rear and, finally, righthand front.

Removal
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Mark relationship of wheel to axle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If drum is difficult to remove, proceed as follows:
- Ensure parking brake is released.
- Back off parking brake cable adjustment.
- Remove access hole plug from backing plate, insert screwdriver through hole and push parking brake lever off its stop.
- Insert punch through hole in splash shield, tap on punch to loosen drum and remove drum, Fig. .
- Remove actuator spring using brake tool No. J-38400, or equivalent, to pry loop end of spring from adjuster actuator, Fig. . D...

- If any components are of doubtful strength or quality because of heat discoloration, or are worn, replace them.
- Inspect wheel cylinder dust boots for signs of excessive wear or damage. If any leakage is apparent replace wheel cylinder.
- Clean dirt and/or rust from brake drum, backing plate and other components. Do not use compressed air or dry brush to clean brake components.
