Service Brake

The rear brake shoes adjust automatically when the vehicle is driven in reverse and the brakes are applied sharply several times. Manual adjustment is required only when brake shoes are replaced. When adjusting rear brakes, ensure parking brake is properly adjusted and adjuster is operating freely.

  • With drums removed, clean areas where shoes contact backing plate, then apply suitable lubricant to contact areas. Ensure lubricant does not contaminate linings.

Drum brakes are available in standard versions or in heavy duty versions. Refer to Figs. and for component locations when performing the following procedures.

Removal

Standard Duty
  • Raise and support vehicle, remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.
  • Remove and discard spring nut.
  • If brake drum is rusted to axle shaft pilot diameter, tap center of brake drum between wheel studs.
  • Pull brake drum off of axle.
  • If brake drums will not come off, sing a screwdriver, move brake shoe adjusting lever off of brake adjusting screw, then loosen brake adjuster to allow drum to release.

Brake Linings

Remove both front wheels and inspect the brake discs, calipers and linings. (Wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if required).

Do not get any oil or grease on the linings. It is recommended that both front wheel sets be replaced whenever a respective shoe and lining is worn or damaged. Inspect and, if required, replace rear brake linings also.

If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.
