Sliding caliper rear disc brakes are used on these models. The caliper is basically the same as the larger front wheel caliper. However, a parking brake mechanism and a larger inner brake shoe anti-rattle spring have been added.

• Disconnect master cylinder from booster leaving brake lines connected and secure cylinder aside.
• Start engine and operate engine at idle speed.
• With engine running, position gauge over pushrod. Gauge should bottom against booster housing with force of approximately five lbs. applied to pushrod, Fig. . Ensure pushrod is properly seated in booster when performing gauge inspection.
• If force required to seat gauge is more than five lbs., shorten length of pushrod.
• If force required to seat gauge is less than five lbs., lengthen pushrod.

Power brake operation concerns should be handled as if two separate systems exist.

• Inspect for faults in hydraulic system first.
• If hydraulic system is satisfactory, inspect power brake circuit.
• Press brake pedal firmly and then start engine.
• Pedal should fall away slightly and less pressure should be needed to maintain pedal in any position.
• Install of suitable pressure gauge in brake hydraulic system.
• Record pressure with engine off and power unit not operating.
• Maintain pedal height, start engine and record measurement.

This system operates on the same principles as conventional front and rear split systems using primary and secondary master cylinders moving simultaneously to exert hydraulic pressure on their respective systems, Fig. .

The hydraulic brake lines on this system, however, have been diagonally split front to rear (left front to right rear and right front to left rear) in place of separate lines to the front and rear wheels.

On models with anti-lock brakes, the brake booster system must be depressurized before disconnecting any hydraulic lines or fittings. Depressurize the system by pumping the brake pedal at least 25 times with the ignition in the Off position.

Disc brake service is critical because of the close tolerances required in machining the brake disc to ensure proper brake operation.

Maintaining close control of the shape of the rubbing surfaces is required to prevent brake roughness. In addition, the surface finish must be non-directional and maintained at a micro-inch finish. This is required to avoid pulls and erratic performance, and to promote long lining life and equal lining wear of both the lefthand and righthand brakes.
